You can use Markdown to create unordered (bulleted) and ordered (numbered) lists. (You cannot create definition lists.)
Start each new line with an asterisk (“*”) and character space. So this:
* another item
- a list item
- another item
For ordered lists, use “1.” instead of asterisks, but include the character space as before. So this:
1. item two
1. item three
- item one
- item two
- item three
If you’re having problems getting the lists to render, ensure you have a blank line above and below the list set you’re creating. This will also make the list easier to see/distinguish when working on it in draft mode.
Though not always necessary for every block element (e.g. headers), it’s a good habit to always add blank lines above and below block elements when using markup syntaxes like Markdown, Textile, etc. This way they’re sure to render correctly even if the blank lines aren’t necessary in some cases.
